Antifoul Removal

Over the last 30 years, Masterblast has carried out antifoul removal services on all sizes of vessels of all sizes, including:

  • 6m – 60m+ boats
  • Sailing boats
  • Motor cruisers
  • Yachts
  • And more!

As with all aspects of abrasive blasting, it is important to use the correct blasting media if you are to be left with a good finished surface.

The removal of the antifoul is usually carried out using a wet abrasive cleaning process as this suppresses nearly all the dust and contaminants and helps to keep the waste material in one area.

Benefits of antifoul removal for your boat

Over time, the antifoul paint on your boat can become worn, and ineffective, and will likely build up sub-aquatic microorganisms. Removing damaged antifoul paint (and replacing with new antifoul) can benefit your boat in numerous ways:

  • Increase the maximum speed of your boat
  • Improve your boat’s cruising speed
  • Improve fuel efficiency
  • Remove microorganisms that could damage your hull

Masterblast are experienced in choosing the right blast media for your boat

Sometimes when removing anti-foul, we may find that the vessel in its past had a coating of epoxy, and as long as the epoxy is in a sound condition it will not be removed. However, if the epoxy coating is failing, even using a very light blast media will sometimes remove some, if not all of the epoxy coating. If whilst the blasting is being carried out it is noticed that the epoxy coating is failing, the operative can change the blast media being used and remove the dead coating. This can usually be done without causing any major damage to the gel coat.
